Hi Judy
I loved your puppy story! Christmas before last I was taking an old lady's
cat to the vet for her and I passed a man selling puppies on the side of the
road!!
It was a boiling hot day and he had them in a cardboard box with no food or
water - I suspect he had stolen them. Needless to say I bought them - beat
him down to R100 for the lot (6) - and took them to the vet with me. They
were only 3 weeks old and barely weaned! I hated buying them like this
because I feel that it just encourages this type of crime but I couldnt be
sure that the man would still be there by the time I returned with
reinforcements - I was scared he would make a run for it and take the
puppies with him.
Anyway my household of 43 cats were absolutely HORRIFIED (to put it
mildly) and after 5 days (over the Christmas weekend) I was forced to hand
them over to a shelter who rescues dogs in the same way as Kitten Action
rescues kittens. I felt that it wasnt fair on my cats - many of whom refused
to come inside at all for the whole 5 days!! This is after all their home.
Because the puppies werent properly weaned, feeding time was absolute bedlam
and what a mess!!! Plus of course everytime one woke up and started
yelping, they all woke up and started yelping - a real high pitched yowl -
poor little guys just wanted their mother - my cats just went helter skelter
out of the door!
It was 5 days of absolute hell - I really do love all animals but must
admit to a severe cat bias and now I know why!! Kittens are so easy - and
clean, and smart!
Hugs and kittens (no puppies for this household!!)
